SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: BCS Projection Has Alabama And Oregon On Top

$

We are still a week away from the first official BCS ranking, but with two human polls (Coaches and Harris) along with five of the six computer rankings now available, there is enough information to project what the BCS rankings would look like. And according to BCSknowhow.com if the season ended today, Alabama would play Oregon in the BCS title game.

Bama and Oregon, who are 1-2 in the two human polls are not a surprise at the top. However, now we see just how close South Carolina is to crashing the party. And if Steve Spurrier's crew can run the table in the SEC, the tougher schedule could vault them past Oregon.

It is also worth noting that the top two teams in the country according to the computer rankings are Notre Dame and Florida. So keep an eye out for those two should they continue to win games and convert voters...

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: BCS Picture Is Starting To Clear Up

$

Most teams still have five regular season games remaining, and a select few will also play in their conference championship game. But barring a handful of monumental upsets, the BCS title picture is down to five teams.

In the latest BCS rankings, Alabama maintains its firm grip on the top spot, followed once again by Florida. However, they both cannot finish the season undefeated as they are on pace to face each other in the SEC title game.

If one of those two teams finishes the season unblemished, they will likely face one of Oregon, Kansas State, or Notre Dame. Oregon still has matchups against top-ten opponents USC and Oregon State (both games on the road) and Notre Dame must travel to 8th-ranked Oklahoma and no. 9 USC. Meanwhile, Kansas State has the best shot at going undefeated with their toughest matchups coming at home against Texas Tech (#14) and Texas (#23).

South Carolina's Head Football Coach Believes Alabama Could Beat Some NFL Teams

The Alabama football team is the defending national champion and have won 12 games in a row dating back to last season.

There's no doubt the Crimson Tide is a dominant college football team, but how dominant?

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier believes they could beat several teams in the NFL.

Here's what Spurrier said during interview on The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday (H/T CBS Sports):

“Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I've watched on Sundays,” Spurrier said. “I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there, that usually know what's going on, I'd guess Alabama would be favored by a little bit.”

Sure, the Crimson Tide will have a handful of players that will be selected in next year's NFL Draft, but only a collection of players in the nation have enough talent to make immediate contributions at the next level.

The majority of NFL players aren't considered in their primes of their careers until they've already been through the grind for four or five years.

Spurrier should know that success in the college game does not necessarily translate to the pro ranks. He served as head coach of the Washington Redskins for two seasons beginning in 2002, going 12-20, before deciding to head back to college ball.

Alabama would be hard-pressed to come close in a game with any team in the NFL.

Gambling Expert Says The Worst Team In The NFL Would Still Be A Huge Betting Favorite Over Alabama

Steve Spurrier stirred the pot a bit by saying he believed Alabama was good enough to beat some NFL teams. Specifically, Spurrier said he guessed "Alabama would be favored by a little bit."

There's just one small problem. It's not true.

According to RJ Bell, a betting expert from Pregame.com, the two worst teams in the NFL, the Jaguars and the Chiefs, would both be 24-point favorites over Alabama on a neutral field.

And those teams are pretty bad this year. Through seven games, both the Jaguars and Chiefs are 1-6 and are being outscored by nearly 13 points per game. So imagine what the point spread would be against a mediocre team (31 points?) or even a good team like the Patriots (42 points?)

Of course, Spurrier of all people should know just how big the jump is from the college ranks to the NFL. He tried it as a player and as a coach. And both times it didn't go well.

LSU Fans Are Cooking Pigs Disguised As Baby Elephants Prior To Showdown With Alabama

ESPN the Magazine ruffled some feathers this morning when they sent out a picture on Twitter of what they said was a baby elephant being cooked at an LSU tailgate. LSU is playing Alabama tonight, whose mascot is an elephant.

And despite fooling (and angering) many people. It is actually not a baby elephant. Rather, according to several fans, it is a pig with large ears and a trunk sewn on. which in and of itself still seems rather disturbing...

Fake baby elephant

And apparently this is a common practice, as this image is from a different tailgate, and also shows what appears to be a pig disguised as a baby elephant...

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: Notre Dame Drops In BCS Rankings

$

Before this weekend, there was a lot of sentiment that if Notre Dame finished the regular season undefeated they would find a way into the BCS Championship game even if both Oregon and Kansas State also went undefeated. But after struggling to beat Pittsburgh in triple-overtime, that no longer seems possible.

Notre Dame fell one spot this week, with Oregon moving up to third on the strength of their win over USC. Meanwhile, Kansas State's hold on second place slipped a little. After leading Notre Dame by .025 and Oregon by .026 last week, the Wildcats now have just a .015 point lead over Oregon. Notre Dame is now .027 behind K-State.

There is still hope for Notre Dame who leads both Oregon and Kansas State in the computer polls. But they would need many of the human voters to suddenly move them up in their polls. And there is little reason to think that will happen...

Texas A&M Upsets Alabama, Creating Nightmare BCS Scenario

Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M

Top-ranked Alabama was upset today by Texas A&M, opening the door for a BCS Championship game that nobody wants to see.

Texas A&M grabbed an early 20-0 lead and held on late with an interception at the goalline to preserve a 29-24 win. But more importantly, the loss by the Crimson Tide will likely vault Kansas State and Oregon up to the top two spots in the BCS rankings.

Not only will this create a matchup most college football fans won't care about, it is also nightmare scenario for a potentially undefeated Notre Dame and their legion of followers that have been waiting for a long time to be relevant again.

At this point, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which Notre Dame, who struggled to beat Pittsburgh a week ago, leapfrogs either Oregon or Kansas State. And if Notre Dame does finish undefeated, and on the outside, looking in, it will be a tough pill for the Fighting Irish to swallow.

It is one thing to get bumped from the BCS title game by a team like Bama. It is something else entirely to get bumped by Oregon and Kansas State. And at this point, even Notre Dame haters would rather see the Fighting Irish in the BCS title game.

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: Notre Dame's Win Eliminates Several Teams, Including Ohio State

$

Prior to this weekend's games, several teams, including Florida, Oregon, and Kansas State were holding out hope that one or two teams would lose and they could sneak into the BCS Championship game. But with Notre Dame's win over USC, all those hopes were dashed.

Notre Dame will now play in the BCS title game against the winner of next weekend's SEC Championship between Alabama and Georgia.

Another team hurt by Notre Dame's win was Ohio State, who beat Michigan and finished the season undefeated. While not eligible for the BCS Championship, Ohio State is ranked fourth in the AP Poll, which is still recognized by the NCAA. A Notre Dame loss could have opened the door for a split-National Championship. But thankfully, we no longer have to worry about that...

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: Florida Is Getting Screwed In BCS Rankings

$

Below is a look at the RPI ranking of every team Florida and Alabama has played this season (via RealTimeRPI.com). Florida has four wins this season against teams that are currently in the RPI top-15. Alabama has only one win against a top-15 team, and that was against a team (LSU) that Florida also defeated.

However, where Florida separates itself from Alabama is the next tier. The Gators' third and fourth most impressive wins were against S. Carolina (RPI #10) and Florida St. (#15). Meanwhile, Bama's third and fourth best wins were Mississippi St. (#40) and Mississippi (#57). In addition, Florida's one blemish was a "better loss" having lost to no. 3 Georgia on a neutral field, while Alabama lost at home to no. 9 Texas A&M.

Of course, the difference is Alabama started the year ranked second, while Florida was no. 23 in the coaches' preseason poll. So, while Florida is no. 2 in five of the six BCS computer rankings, Bama (ranked 3-7 in computer rankings) remains well ahead of Florida in both human polls...

Alabama will play Notre Dame for the national championship after beating Georgia 32-28 in the SEC championship game. But Bama had to sweat until the final second as Georgia was inside the 10-yard line looking for the go-ahead touchdown.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, a pass that looked like it was intended for a receiver in the endzone was tipped and caught by a receiver short of the endzone, who then slipped and went down. The clock ran out and Georgia didn't get another play.

Here's the final sequence...

In the month leading up to Notre Dame's first trip to the national championship game in more than two decades, Irish faithful have created a series of T-shirts bashing their opponent, Alabama.

Notre Dame is winning the trash-talking battle with the series of racy shirts, but the last thing Notre Dame needs is to provide a feisty Crimson Tide team and fan base with any source of motivation before the game.

Maybe Alabama will take the shirts for their comedic value.

Eleven days to the BCS National Championship game:

Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen drew criticism from the public less than two weeks ago when he tweeted out a photo of this shirt:

Alabama football

The University of Alabama has one of the most storied programs in college football and their uniform is a classic. But that won't stop Nike from trying to leave its mark on the BCS championship game by giving the Crimson Tide a uniform makeover.

It will be interesting to see how these uniforms are received by Alabama fans. They do have a nice modern look while still maintaining the traditional elements that we have come to recognize as Alabama football. Then again, for some, any change is never good.

Nike is calling the Pro Combat Hypercool uniform their 'most innovative uniform system'

Nike will not make the helmets, but it appears that they will also be wearing a shinier version of their classic crimson helmet

Here is how the new set compares to the current uniform. Notice the colors appear to be more consistent (helmet vs numbers)

Alabama and Notre Dame are two of college football's most storied programs winning 25 consensus national championships combined. Alabama's 14 titles are the most among schools since 1900 while Notre Dame's 11 are tied with Michigan and USC for the second-most all-time.

A look below at how each school accumulated their titles shows that outside of Notre Dame's recent 24-year drought, both schools have been amazingly consistent over the last century...

Monti Teo and Nick Saban

If college football teams could be bought and sold like NFL teams, how much would it cost to purchase the Notre Dame and Alabama?

According to a study at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (via WSJ.com), Notre Dame's football team is worth $579.4 million while the Alabama program is worth $476 million.

That is nearly $1.1 billion combined. Amazingly, neither school is among the top three most valuable football programs.

The study used factors such as "revenues and expenses and made cash-flow adjustments, risk assessments and growth projections" to calculate the value of each program.

Here's the top ten, which includes five SEC teams, two Big 12 teams, two Big Ten teams, and one independent...

  1. Texas, $761.7 million

Katherine Webb twitter AJ Mccarron girlfriend

The real star of the Alabama-Notre Dame BCS National Championship game tonight wasn't quarterback A.J. McCarron. It was his 23-year-old, pageant-winning girlfriend, Katherine Webb.

Webb was formerly Miss Alabama. Up until last week, she only had a few hundred Twitter followers. But tonight ESPN found her in the stands at Sun Life Stadium.

She was only on TV for a few minutes, but the announcers went wild. They called Webb a "beautiful woman" and recommended boys in Alabama start "playing catch in the backyard" to win a woman like Webb.

After that, Twitter followers poured in. While her boyfriend was playing on the field, she surpassed him in fans. Even LeBron James started following her account, @_KatherineWebb. Now, she has more than 92,000 followers and counting.

Who is Webb? Here are a few fun facts about Miss Alabama 2012:

  • She first tried for Miss Georgia in 2007 and lost.
  • She graduated from Alabama's rival, Auburn, in 2011
  • Webb currently works for Chick-fil-A, but she also models.
  • She enjoys playing paintball.
